About the Station

Integrated Transport Centre for the Lublin Functional Area

The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Lubelskie Voivodeship Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020

Name of Beneficiary: Lublin Municipality
Total project value: 339 755 633.40 PLN
Grant value: 193 761 245.73 PLN
Programme name: Lubelskie Voivodeship Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020
Priority axis: 5 Energy Efficiency and Low Emission Economy
Measure: 5.6 Energy efficiency and low-emission economy for Integrated Territorial Investments of the Lublin Functional Area
Project implementation date: 2017 r. – 2023 r.

As part of the project, a Metropolitan Station will be built to bring together public transport, rail and bus services in one part of the city. The entire Station Square will be transformed into a pedestrian precinct, at the heart of which will be a smart, modern station building with platforms and a new road layout.

Project objectives
The main aim of the investment is to develop and improve the public transport system integrating various types of public transport in the LOF area (long-distance, regional and urban). Implementation of the project will increase the competitiveness of public transport in relation to individual transport in terms of reduced travel time, comfort, safety and accessibility for people with disabilities. The project will also contribute to increasing the attractiveness of the low-emission public transport system in the region.

Scope of the project

The works related to the construction of the ZCK are divided into several tasks;

  1. construction of a multifunctional ZCK facility integrating national, regional and local collective transport, including:

The development area (nearly 28,900 m²) will feature a total of:

  • 13 stands for public transport;
  • 53 stands for long-distance and regional transport buses;
  • 4 charging bays for electric buses;
  • 122 parking spaces for buses and minibuses;
  • 166 parking spaces in ‘Park&Ride’ facilities;
  • 67 parking spaces in ‘Bike&Ride’ facilities;
  • 11 parking spaces in ‘Kiss&Ride’ facilities;
  • 4.19 km of trolleybus lines constructed/rebuilt;
  • 1.85 km of bus lines constructed/rebuilt;
  • 1.3 km of bicycle infrastructure constructed.

In addition, numerous cycle paths, pedestrian routes, lighting and monitoring, and hotspot installations will be built throughout the project area. Elements of small architecture, low and high greenery will be installed. Rest areas for pedestrians and cyclists will also be created. The entire space will be adapted to the needs of people with disabilities.

Modern and environmentally friendly station

The building of the multifunctional station will be characterised by the application of a number of solutions dictated by environmental concerns. It will use ground-source heat pumps to provide the energy needed to heat the building. The idea of a ‘building within a building’, that is, surrounding the main hall of the station with a glass wall with a low heat transfer coefficient, is intended to reduce energy consumption. The roofs over the bus stands are to be covered with photovoltaic panels, with the capacity to make the building fully self-sufficient in energy. Another solution is the use of anti-smog paving blocks. When exposed to light, the titanium dioxide contained in the paving blocks allows toxic fumes to be transformed into harmless substances. Greenery planting is planned for the roof of the station, with an emphasis on plant species that are particularly efficient in purifying the air. A special rainwater recovery system will provide water for watering the plants as well as for sanitary purposes.

Effects of project implementation
Implementation of the investment will allow public transport to prevail over individual transport thanks to the development and improvement of the transport network in the Lublin Functional Area and the mobility of its inhabitants. There will be an improvement and development of the public transport system, an increase in the prioritisation of less emitting means of transport and an improvement in the comfort of travelling by different forms of transport in the city and the entire Lublin Functional Area.
